The project entails the digitalization and cataloguing of relevant samples of geographic maps (general and thematic maps of the territories which were within the former Italian colonies) housed at the Agronomic Institute for Overseas (Istituto Agronomico per l’Oltremare, IAO).
The work aims at the creation of an online digital archive for the preservation, inventory, organization and study of a vast cartographic heritage from the colonial times, dated between 19th century and 20th century.
The most important outreach output of this research has been the setting up of a cartographic and photographic exhibition with IAO archival material. To this core material, further unpublished cartographic documentation (housed at the SAGAS Department) has been added, together with some photographic material owned by the Accademia dei Georgofili (Firenze) and other Florentine private collections.
The exhibition has been entitled “Cartografia e immagini della Libia coloniale. Dai primi esploratori alla costruzione dell’immaginario d’oltremare” (curated by Irene Calloud) and it has been set up during the “Settimana dell’Università” held in Firenze from 12 to 18 April 2015 in the building of the SAGAS Department. A printed catalogue of the exhibition has been published by the Casa Editrice Phasar.
