Multidisciplinary study focused on the role that water on transforming the territory of the city of Pistoia, by influencing settlements and production choices within the extremely long time ranging from the Pliocene to the contemporary times and by leaving marks which are still visible today in the landscape. This aspect has been analysed according to historico-geographical approach up to was chronologically possible, or by conducting a series of studies and modelling processes from a geological and archaeological perspective.
The 3D reconstruction of the ancient landscapes identified enables to draw attention to the most important characteristics of the transformation of the Pistoia territory, with particular attention to the low-land which has been, really, shaped by the waters – waters from the ancient lake, the waterways which have flooded it, from the canals and millpond built by people. The temporal line has been subdivided in six period, but without straight divisions, by highlighting some events, or interventions, which have marked the beginning of a new phase through deep signs in the landscape. In this context, six different virtual reconstructions of the Pistoia territory have been developed.
The results of the project have been issued within the framework of the exhibition “Disegni d’acqua. Acque e trasformazioni del territorio” (Water drawing. Waters and tranformations of the territory) promoted by the
Consorzio di Bonifica del Medio Valdarno and included in the programmes for the events related to Pistoia as 2017 Italian Capital of Culture.
